Our Story

Why One Man Left a Stable Career to Build a Genuine Odisha Food Startup That Actually Helps Farmers

Nihar Ranjan Kar walked away from a secure corporate career to start Soil to Serve, a genuine Odisha food startup based in Angul and operated by Agribite Soil To Serve Private Limited. There was no funding, no safety net, and no guarantee it would work.

Only a frustration he could not ignore: farmers across Kandhamal and Odisha were growing turmeric, millets, and wild honey of extraordinary quality, yet earning a fraction of what that quality was worth. Helping farmers get a fair price for their soil's true wealth mattered more to Nihar than the comfort of a paycheck.

Today, this Odisha food startup is FSSAI-certified and sells farm-direct Kandhamal Turmeric, cold pressed peanut oil, ragi and jowar flour, Chakhao black rice, and wild honey — sourced straight from farmer groups, in limited batches, available on soiltoserve.store, Flipkart, and Amazon.

The Journey

The Journey Behind Our Odisha Food Startup

The Beginning
Nihar grew up in a middle-class family in Angul, Odisha — where everyone expected him to get a government job. He had different plans.
Education
He pursued B.Sc. (Hons.) in Agriculture from M.S. Swaminathan School of Agriculture, Paralakhemundi, followed by an MBA in Agribusiness Management from KIIT School of Rural Management, Bhubaneswar — one of India's leading agribusiness institutions.
Corporate Years
He spent two years in the corporate sector across two organisations, learning how India's farm-to-consumer food supply chain really works — and where it fails farmers most.
The Turning Point
A personal circumstance led him to resign. In that quiet moment, he noticed something hiding in plain sight — Odisha's finest regional foods like Kandhamal Turmeric, tribal millets, and cold pressed oils were invisible to the very consumers who needed them most.
Soil to Serve is Born
Not from a boardroom. Not from funding. From a son of Odisha who refused to let his land's authentic, nutrient-rich food go unnoticed by Indian consumers.
"Everyone told me to get a job. I chose to build something that gives farmers a better one."
A Traveller at Heart
Beyond building Soil to Serve, Nihar is an avid traveller who finds inspiration in every corner of India — from the waterfall trails of Malyagiri to the spice farms of Kandhamal. He is planning to feature iconic tourist destinations of Odisha and India right on the product packaging — because great food and great places both deserve to be celebrated together.
